Why teachers are asking for it

Classroom Captions is a Chrome extension that turns a teacher's speech into live on-screen captions and translates them in real time into 100+ languages. Teachers request it for two reasons:

• Accessibility. Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, students with auditory processing needs, and IEP/504 accommodations get live captions on their own screen, at their own font size.
• English learners. ELL and newcomer students follow the same lesson as everyone else, reading it live in the language they know, and can ask questions that arrive on the teacher's screen translated into English.

Students join with a class code or QR code. There are no student accounts, no student sign-in, and nothing for students to pay: the teacher holds the only subscription.

Force-install via the Google Admin console

The fastest rollout is a force-install to your student organizational units, so the extension is simply there on every managed Chromebook.

1. Open the Admin console at admin.google.com and go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions.
2. Select the organizational unit you want to deploy to (for example, Students, or a specific school or grade).
3. Add the extension by ID. Click the yellow + button, choose Add Chrome app or extension by ID, and paste the extension ID below.
4. Set the installation policy to Force install (or Force install + pin to browser toolbar so students can always find the CC icon), then save.

Teachers on managed devices can be covered by the same policy in a teacher OU, or they can install it themselves from the Chrome Web Store.

Lock student devices to the student view

The extension supports Chrome's managed storage. Setting a policy of role: student locks the extension into the student experience on managed devices: students can join a class, pick a language, and read captions, but the teacher controls (sign-in, captioning, billing) are hidden.

In the same Apps & extensions panel, select the extension in your student OU, find the Policy for extensions field, and paste:

Network notes

• The extension communicates with the Classroom Captions backend over standard HTTPS (port 443). If you filter outbound traffic, allow that traffic like any other web app.
• Student devices only read captions from the teacher's live room. Students never publish captions, and there are no inbound connections, no peer-to-peer traffic, and no local ports to open.
• There is nothing to self-host and nothing to configure on your end: no projects to create, no credentials to manage, no service accounts. Room sharing is fully hosted for you.
• Google Fonts is used on this website only; the extension itself does not depend on it.

Privacy summary for IT

• Students are anonymous. No student accounts, no student sign-in, and no student PII is collected. A join is just a class code plus a language choice.
• Captions are transient. Caption text is relayed to the students in the room and automatically deleted within 24 hours.
• Transcripts stay local. Session transcripts live on the teacher's device until the teacher chooses to export them to their own Google Drive or share them.
• Nothing to manage on devices. Teachers never set up or store anything for AI features; it is all handled on our side, with nothing to configure on the device.
• FERPA-friendly posture. Because no student records or identifiers are collected, the extension is designed to sit comfortably inside a district's FERPA obligations.

Who pays, and how

Teachers subscribe individually at $6/month with a 10-day free trial, and payments are processed by Stripe, so every teacher has Stripe receipts available for reimbursement. Schools that prefer to cover the cost can simply reimburse teachers; there is no district contract required. Students are always free.
